Sun International chefs partner Rise Against Hunger in showdown for World Food Day

Chefs from seven Sun International properties around the country are taking one another on in a bid to end hunger by raising money for NPO Rise Against Hunger(RAH).

The Chef Showdown Challenge, which started in September, culminates in World Food Day on October 16, and aims to create awareness of the hunger crisis in South Africa.

Chef’s teams from The Maslow Sandton, Sibaya Casino, Grand West, Golden Valley, Windmill Casino, The Wild Coast Sun resort and Time Square, have created tasty recipes using ingredients from the Rise Against Hunger meal pack of rice, soya, lentils and spice mix. There was no restriction on any other ingredients they were allowed to incorporate.

The Maslow Beasts promised to put ‘passion on a plate’ and believe the competition is “the ideal platform to showcase our Chef`s skills and teamwork.”

Golden Valley’s ‘2 Cooks and A Boss’ were motivated to “bring exposure to RAH’s work, and be challenged as chefs to create and bring new flavours to dishes while pushing ourselves to strive for excellence”.

Team Sibaya said their motivation was to use their “skills, passion and teamwork” to reduce hunger.

GrandWest ‘Chefs that Care’ were participating in the challenge “to show those who are less fortunate how to make amazing dishes with three simple ingredients, and how these meal packs can be stretched to feed bigger families”. 

Windmill Casino’s ‘Perfect Peppers’ hope to “save the nation from hunger by giving back. This is our daily routine, our core business and where our hearts are, and we want to showcase what is possible”.

The Wild Coast Sun ‘Wild Chefs’ were using their “skills and passion for the betterment of the community because you can’t live a full life on an empty tummy”.

The ‘Time Square Legends’ are motivated “to be part of the change, to ensure that everyone can get a meal without prejudice or circumstance. We want to make a difference and display the Sun way by giving the community as much support as we can”.

Each team’s video of their cook-off will be shared with the media and on social media to generate and create support. RAH has also created a voting platform for followers to vote for their favourite dish. The chef with the most votes will win this section of the competition.

Each team has its own profile on GivenGain, where members of the public will be encouraged to show their support by making a donation to their favourite team, and the one which generates the most funds will win this section of the competition.

RAH CEO Brian Nell said the NPO was excited to partner with Sun International for this year’s World Food Day Chef Showdown. “The main aim of this initiative is to create awareness around the hunger crisis we have in South Africa. We believe the Chefs from Sun International will not only achieve this, but also use their skills and expertise to create mouth-watering recipes for RAH Africa’s beneficiaries who receive our meal packs. RAH Africa would like to extend our thanks to all Sun International units and Chefs for their participation and enthusiasm.“

The public can vote between 1 October and 15 October.  Three judges from the South African Chefs Association will judge the videos and the winner will be announced on October 16.

Because of Covid, each chef and their team was filmed creating the dishes in their own kitchens. These have been uploaded to the RAH website (link below).
