Artist: Sandra Reeders, Rhodes EC – Medium: Canvas and Oils
“In Rhodes you don’t have to ‘look for something to paint. Every view is a painting that is just waiting to be captured.” We asked Sandra to share her vision and her work.
“I have always painted, with oils on canvas,” says Sandra. “ I absolutely LOVE colour! I don’t sketch before I paint my pieces. They are crafted purely with colour. I simply apply layers of colour reflecting what I see. Rhodes, our home, is magical. The natural beauty of mountains super-special,” she adds.
“As a young woman, when I looked at Pierneef’s work and I wondered how he came upon the imagery of voluminous clouds forming and merging seamlessly with the horizon. Growing up at the ocean in Port Elizabeth, flat clouds above the watery horizon were the norm.”
That was until I lived in the mountains – where the clouds pop up and billow over the mountains. The point where mountain and the clouds meet is where the magic of each piece resides. I paint wherever I am guided to stand and I paint exactly what I see in that moment… no staging, just natural beauty and vibrancy.
