When you love money, money will love you back
Do you love money? Do you really, really want it? Do you pay attention to it, appreciate it, give it your time and energy? Or do you give it mixed signals – wanting it one minute and denying your relationship with it in the next.
Do you obsess over money? Keeping it firmly under control? Wanting to know its every movement? Jealously guarding it? Accounting for every cent? Laying out its path into a fully scripted future?
Or do you ignore money? Pretending it’s not there, that it’s not important to you, even as you secretly yearn to have it in your life?
Maybe you use money without a moment’s thought and then regret it, discard it without a second glance, blaming it for all your troubles.
Consider the significant others in your life. How would they react if you behaved in the same way? Would they stick around for more, or would they leave you?
Everything exists by virtue of relationship, everything is connected and money is something we are in relationship with too. Yet no one wants to admit to loving money and we think badly of people who do, too. But until and unless we love money, it will not come to us. And until and unless we love ourselves no one and nothing will come to us either – including money.
Our relationship with money will reflect our relationship with other things in our life. And the patterns that exist in other areas of life will reflect in our relationship with money. This is because everything is energy and everything is connected – and the good news about that is that we can create change in one area of life by creating change in another. Especially if it we apply our awareness, consciousness and intent.
To enrich our finances we need to do much more than balance our cheque books, have a sound investment plan and save more than we spend. These things will help of course, but if we do not love money – and if we do not cultivate our relationship with money – like anyone else unloved and ignored, money will simply not stick around.
The rules for enriching our finances are the same as the rules for enriching other relationships in our life: Love, attention, appreciation and most importantly, finding and cultivating those little moments that money can’t buy. For if you find those, you have found the secret to wealth and, from there, all wealth will follow.
We often overlook this point. We think that keeping a relationship healthy is very different from keeping our finances healthy. But because everything is energy, everything is connected. So therefore our relationship to money is reflected by our other relationships and vice versa. When we look closely, we find that the deep patterns that exist in our relationships will repeat and reflect in our relationship with money.
The good news is that we can significantly improve our relationship to money by working on our relationship to self and to others. This need not be a long and arduous journey. We do not need to get to know the whys. We simply need to acknowledge where we are at this moment and our desire to change.
Do a little reality check. You could also do some free writing, writing for two minutes on each prompt. Reflect on the following for a few moments:
- What pattern repeats itself in your life in respect of:
- a) Your relationships b) your relationship to money c) your relationship to self.
- Specifically consider how your relationships generally begin and end. Is there a common theme or pattern? What is the pattern or connection?
- What is the general pattern in your financial affairs? How do your money cycles begin and end?
- Which pattern or part of a pattern would you like to change?
- What is your intent? What do you want?
- What can you do today to start changing the pattern?
- Decide to do what needs to be done. Take any decisions you need to take. Make the change.
- Celebrate!
Mother Teresa said “There is more hunger for love and appreciation in this world than for bread”. When last did you offer yourself and your money the same attention and love as you give your child or your beloved? We are led to believe that loving money or self is not as good a thing to do as loving others. Yet if we are to ‘love others as we love ourselves’ we need to start there.
The first and most important thing to know – that which will enrich you from this very moment, is that YOU ARE THE MONEY! YOU are the one who creates it. You are the source of the money. The money comes from you! Consider that for a moment. There is no one who will qualify you or authorise you or allow you to have it. You are the one who makes it happen. What will you do to change your relationship to money today?
