With Alani’s Tantalising Detox Treats

Uplifting Cherry

While you’re holding onto the last bit of celebratory holiday vibes, this beautifully uplifting concoction is simple, yet effective for the body that needs to restore itself.

Potassium-rich coconut water is perfect for restoring electrolytes after festive drinks. While cherries have been found to strengthen blood vessels, the antioxidant properties provide gout and arthritis relief from uric acid.

This drink is so pretty; if you’re still celebrating with friends or family after the official party, this is perfect to sip by the pool or with lunch.

Ingredients
1 Litre of raw coconut water
250g Cherries

Directions
1. Blitz the coconut water and cherries in a blender.
2. Strain through a sieve into a glass pitcher with ice.
Serve cold

If you are looking for more zest, spritz some fresh lemon into the pitcher.

Hearty but Light Breakfast

Sometimes people think that papaya for breakfast is for fruitarians; but what they don’t know is that eating a papaya the day after a night of celebrating can significantly decrease inflammation in the body.

Combining papaya with blueberries not only provides pleasure for your taste buds, but the antioxidants in the blueberries neutralise any acid-forming substances in the body.
I’ve added the maca powder for minerals and metabolism strengthening.

Ingredients
1 Small papaya
250g Blueberries
1 Tablespoon hemp hearts
1 Teaspoon maca powder
1 Handful of soaked cashews
1 Date
1 Cup of water

Directions
1. Blend the cashew nuts with water and maca powder and add the flesh of the date. Blend until smooth and milky.
2. Chop papaya up and add to a bowl.
3. Pour cashew milk over.
4. Add blueberries and hemp hearts.
5. Serve.

*Also delicious with added sprouts.

Deliciously Detoxing Light Lunch

Slowing down after the festivities sometimes puts a damper on the excitement you experience throughout December, mostly because we always think we need to detox. But what if I told you that you could still enjoy a fabulously tasting meal and detox at the same time?

Pairing natural diuretic parsley with mineral-rich sea vegetables, is a win for sure!  While both are amazing at controlling high blood pressure, parsley encourages the body to excrete sodium and water, assisting the kidneys with cleansing, aka detox. Sea vegetables, such as arame and hijiki, contain a compound fucoidan, which assists in cleansing cells and blood. Because of the high mineral levels found in sea vegetables, you will be happy to know that they also promote healthy bones, hair and skin – BONUS!

Adding peas provides a clean form of protein, which is light and high in fibre – getting the bowels to clean out.

I added blackberries to this salad due to the cleansing effects of the natural sugars found in all ripe berries. Blackberries also contain 90 per cent water, making them the perfect food for hydration after a night of indulging.

This salad is a titillating delight to the palate… your body will thank you for it!

Ingredients
1 Handful of blackberries
1 Handful of fresh parsley
1 Handful of organic dried arame
1 Handful of raw peas
1 Tablespoon of organic olive oil
1 Pinch of black Indian salt
Juice of ½ a lemon

Directions
Add all ingredients to a bowl and combine.

*Serve with other light foods, such as quinoa, asparagus, and tapas.
*Delicious with a light balsamic vinegar or a cashew cream dressing.
