Your Money Story

Our story defines our experience: Both what we experience and how we experience it. Our story is the lens through which we see the world. It is the wand through which we create our reality. It is both prophet and judge. Our story is what sets our central computer – our mind – to respond either positively or negatively to situations and to adjust reality itself accordingly.

Our story ultimately defines who we are and how we live our lives. It is an outfit that covers our spirit and psyche more closely than our body does. It is insidious, invisibly painting our pathway through the world, yet remaining undetected.

Sure, we have all come across the concept of story – in workshops of mythology or the odd creative writing course. Many of us have considered the archetypes that run our lives or that we inhabit. We may have had occasion to consider ourselves as victim, or harlot (which is somehow habitually excluded for men). We may have gone as far as to align ourselves with an archetypal tale like Cinderella or Jason and the Golden Fleece.

It is good to do this. It is good to stop and consider what tale you are living. What your role is in that tale. Are you the hero of your story? Are you living the tale of your choice or are you there as somebody else’s sidekick, villain, helper? Who wrote this tale?

There are many stories running their threads through the tapestry of this world. At any moment, we have the choice, to change our story. We can rewrite it. We can change both its future and its past. We can become the hero, even if we were originally cast as the minor unnamed extra who is driving the chariot.

All stories exist, all together across all time, past and future. All stories have been written and await to be written. This is not clever philosophising or wordplay, but the nature of reality. Even as destiny has been written, it is dynamic, changing with every moment of our glance and consciousness.

All theories, all constructs – psychological models, mental health labels, physical health labels, religions, pathways, diseases, creation and destruction myths, gods, goddesses are a story that we have created to frame and structure the world. To give it form and meaning. To imbue it with consciousness which can then reflect our own. Because these realities exist, therefore, we exist. That does not mean the stories are not real.

What it means is that if we are trapped in a story which is not enhancing our lives, we can change it. Firstly by recognising it is just a story. Whether the story says we cannot tolerate gooseberries or whether it says we are the innkeeper and cannot therefore ever marry the princess or live in the castle. We know enough about stories to know that, although in this particular story that cannot happen, there are other stories in which it can. So we step out of that story and step into another one. We change our role in the story. We rewrite the story itself. We have choice in this world and that is what having choice means.

The power of story cannot be underestimated. People have transcended the most extraordinary pain and suffering because of the story they chose to tell themselves about what was happening. To do this, they often had to separate themselves from the collective tale being lived and told.

All the paths and religions of the world contain creation and destruction stories, as well as the story of higher powers and beings. So we have our own story as well as the global one, tribal one, societal one. So we are trapped somewhere inside a huge number of overlapping circles that define reality. Yet we are bigger that all those stories put together.

We can choose to step in or out of a story. We can rewrite it. We can rewrite ourselves in it. We can also rewrite the story of the world.

We are, in this very post-apocalyptic moment in our world, poised on the edge of both creation and chaos, poised holding our breaths and our pens, ready to create and write a new tale. The slate is pretty empty. Blank pages surround us like autumn leaves, waiting to be written into a new and vibrant spring.

What will we weave into this new dawn, we who are here at this most auspicious moment in time? Will we hold on to the old dystopian tales written by disillusioned despots? Will we cast our vote with the perpetuators of misery and woe? Will we believe the end is nigh? I think not.

For we can write a new tale. And in this tale we can be the heroes of this new moment in time. We can unleash the power of our imagination to create something far more interesting and alluring than ever before, for both ourselves and for the planet.

And since we are talking money alchemy here, let us begin by rewriting our money tale. Consider the money story of your life. Which story is it? What is your role inside this story and where are you at this moment in the tale? Where does the story lead to from here? How can you change it? Can you change the story so that you become the hero and save the day? Or do you need to step straight out and into another story? Write the tale.

The power of story cannot be underestimated. Our ability to influence our lives as well as the trajectory of the world through the creation of new tales, the weaving of new threads into the tapestry of existence, is our birthright and the reason that we enjoy free will on this planet.

I invite you all to write a new story for the world and for our future in it. Make it so extraordinary and beautiful that the moon and the stars and all the gods and goddesses in creation will clamour to come down and help to make it real. #wecreatetheworld.
